Intentions Nurtured
The seasonal energy of Capricorn, a few considerations as well as my favorite Capricorn yoga poses
This article summarizes some of the most relevant energies and associations that have been useful during Capricorn Season in the past. I hope these transmissions provide some insight and inspiration in the days ahead. May you find respite in the present and all be uplifted!
Capricorn Season
Governed by Jupiter, the Sagittarius season was all about broadening our horizons, spiritually and physically but Capricorn season is about consolidating all we have learned and making the most of our growth. Fiery Sagittarius pursued adventure, and exploration and reached for the sun. Earthbound Capricorn plants roots and nurtures the intentions of seeds sown by Sagittarian optimism.
Feeling focused and driven, it’s a good time to draw up a budget or clean the closet out for some seasonal giving. Just don’t be too down on yourself if you don’t get everything done in a snap. Avoid pessimism, and align with future-focused Capricorn energy!
During some of the most hectic months of the year, find solace in Capricorn’s patience and stability. Even if everyone around you is racing for the finish line and the instant satisfaction of a job well done, extend the practicality of the zodiac to your own choices and pace. Slow down, plan carefully, and don’t work too hard. There will be plenty of time for that.
Seasonal Considerations
Vulnerable to depression and feelings of alienation, Capricorn's archetype is still very dependable and witty, bringing grounding and trust to relationships. Determined and disciplined, Capricorn always gets the job done but may be hyper-focused on doing things traditionally and correctly. While wise and discerning, which can lead to cynicism and rigidity, Capricorn's shadow may feel the need to run the show, but its light tempers this stubbornness with patience and compassion.
Yoga for Capricorn
Capricorn (December 22 to January 19) is symbolized by the sea goat, which is essentially a goat with the tail of a fish. This symbol represents Capricornian's ability to face fear without backing down and to navigate the tumultuous waters of both the material and emotional realms of life. Capricorn is also symbolized by the element of Earth and the color brown, which is also representative of the Earth, so any grounding yoga poses can help to tap into this inner energy and bring it into greater alignment. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is the planet that represents restrictions. Due to this quality and planetary alignment, Capricorns tend to have difficulty forgiving, but they can bring greater light and positivity into their life by learning this skill.
Capricorn is connected with the knees, skin, and connective tissues, so yoga practices that target the fascia and strengthen the knees can be very beneficial. In general, Capricorns tend to be responsible, disciplined, and with immense self-control. But they also struggle with arrogance, holding onto grudges, and cynicism, and they are prone to sadness or depression. Capricorns greatly benefit from flowing practices to let go of this rigidity and benefit from practicing letting go of the little things and embracing imperfection. Although Capricorns can err on the side of seriousness and independence, they also have an immense inner tenacity that helps them to harness profound inner strength and persevere through any problem. By keeping Capricornians' various qualities in mind, you can use yoga to balance the energies, body parts, and nature of this astrological sign.
Check out my favorite poses for Capricorn season below:
1. Hero's Pose (Virasana)
This yoga pose directly targets and strengthens the knees, the body part associated with Capricorn. It is also a unique yoga pose because it can be both active and passive, both a resting posture and a stimulating posture. Capricorns can benefit from this duality by actively learning to shift into passivity and let go of rigidity, bringing a bit of positive softness to their inner state. This yoga pose also builds a strong foundation and embodies the heroic and hard-working energy of Capricorn.
2. Garland Pose (Malasana)
Garland pose is a wonderful yoga pose for Capricorns to find inner peace and shift into a calming state. This is another yoga posture that focuses on the knees, but this yoga pose is more active and brings greater inner strength over time. In this yoga pose, try to focus on grounding through the feet to connect to the Earth element, find internal stability, and deepen your connection to the universal energy.
3. Reclined Butterfly Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana)
This yoga pose is a restorative posture that is the perfect way for Capricorns to practice relaxing their mind and letting go. Hip opener yoga poses are well-known for facilitating emotional releases, which are especially important for Capricorns as they are famous for holding onto grudges and maintaining a serious exterior. This yoga pose is a great time to also work on some light breathwork to help circulate energy through the body and release stagnation. Additionally, as you ease into this posture, try to focus on grounding the body into the Earth to provide both inner and outer support.
4. Wide-Legged Child's Pose (Balasana)
This calming yoga pose is a great time to focus on deep grounding and relaxation of the body, mind, and soul. Since Capricorn is physically associated with the knees and connective tissues, this yoga pose is unique in that it targets both at the same time. Capricorns tend to be more active and serious people, and this yoga pose can encourage inner relaxation and help you tap into your inner playful child.
5. Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)
Triangle pose is an active yoga pose that builds inner strength and determination, two of Capricorns' most prominent qualities. As you shift into a new physical angle, this yoga pose can help you find a new perspective on life by both physically and energetically moving your body and mind. It can be easy to hold onto energy in this pose, so Capricorn's should focus on letting go of some rigidity and finding a bit of flow in this pose to help reduce rigidity in their daily life as well.
6. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Mountain pose is a straightforward yoga posture, but it is also profoundly grounding, meditative, and empowering at the same time. This simple posture can actually be more complicated than it appears, and it dramatically helps in building inner strength while also finding inner calm and stillness by embodying a mountain within your body, mind, and soul. In this yoga pose, try to focus on strengthening the kneecaps and keep everything loose; Capricorns tend to become too rigid, so don't be afraid to add some light swaying or gentle movement to loosen the body and mind.
Bonus Yoga Practices for Capricorn
1. Meditation – Root Chakra Meditation (Muladhara Chakra Dhyana)
Capricorns are connected with the element of Earth, and the root chakra is also associated with this element. By practicing grounding and connecting to the Earth through this meditation practice, you can find more stability, peace, stillness, and connection with the universal flow of energy in your life. In this meditation practice, try to create a strong and firm foundation for your mind and soul to help provide you with some of the tenacious energy common to Capricorn.
2. Pranayama – Humming Bee Breath (Bhramari Pranayama)
This breathing exercise creates a cosmic sound that harmonizes your individual soul with the universal soul. By utilizing this vibrational energy, you can break up any inner stagnation and release pent-up energy within you. Capricorns tend to be focused on the outer world and material success, but this breathing exercise can help you turn to the more subtle nature of the world and focus on your inner state instead. But be sure to make it a joyful practice and try to avoid making this into a chore or something that needs to be perfected to prevent from deepening the serious Capricorn nature.
